Russell holds of Ferrari to win first Sprint of the season

George Russell's perfect start to the 2026 campaign continued in the Chinese Grand Prix Sprit, making it a tenth consecutive session with the Brit on top.

Russell takes the sprint win in China

It was more joy for George Russell as he won the opening sprint race ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. It was an enthralling fight with Lewis Hamilton in the opening stage's of the race, reminiscent of last week in Melbourne between Russell and Leclerc, where both drivers constantly swapped for the race lead. But after lap 5, graining for Hamilton saw him slip away into a fight with his teammate Charles Leclerc. A safety car brought out for Nico Hulkenberg on lap 13, following his team telling him to stop the car, bunched the grid up together. Russell executed the restart perfectly however, and took home the win in the first sprint of the season.

Ferrari close, but not close enough

Ferrari once again were the best at lights out, this time Lewis Hamilton going from 4th to 1st. And he and Russell fought in the opening stages with constant switches for the race lead. Charles Leclerc also had a great start,  gaining 3 places to go to third in the opening lap. However, just like in Melbourne, tyres graining affected Ferrari far more than Mercedes, and the 2 teammates began a fight for second as Russel pulled away. Leclerc was able to get past Hamilton on lap 9, and after the safety car on lap 13, that's the order they finished in. Hamilton scoring only his second top 3 finish with Ferrari, his first also came at the Chinese Grand Prix Sprint, where he won last year.

Antonelli with a sprint race to forget

Kimi Antonelli started P2 for the sprint, the same place he started in Melbourne, and similarly to the start of that race, Antonelli struggled off the line, dropping down to 8th. And on the opening lap he had contact with Isack Hadjar, which resulted in a 10 second time penalty for the Italian. The pace of the Mercedes' allowed Antonelli to make overtakes and work himself up to the fight between the 2 Ferrari cars. When the safety car came out on lap 13, Antonelli served his time penalty, causing him to drop to 7th. With 3 laps of racing after the safety car, Antonelli managed to overtake Liam Lawson and Oscar Piastri to finish 5th. A disappointing result for the teenager.

Red Bull fail to score points in the Sprint

It's been a poor weekend for Red Bull, as they scored no points in the Chinese GP Sprint. Verstappen finished 9th after a poor start which saw him drop to 15th. 15th being where his teammate Isack Hadjar finished, the Frenchman suffering after contact on the opening lap with Antonelli. Red Bull's sister team Racing Bulls just 2 points behind in the Constructors' Championship as Liam Lawson finished 7th to score 2 points. A great performance from the Kiwi who drove his second, and final race for Red Bull last year at the Chinese Grand Prix.
