A new era, a new leader
George Russell wins the Australian Grand Prix, taking the lead of the Driver's Championship for the first time in his career.

Mercedes secure 1-2 in Melbourne
George Russel took the checkered flag first in the season opener down under. His teammate Kimi Antonelli making it a 1-2 for Mercedes ahead of the Ferrari Drivers'. Mercedes' 1 stop strategy and excellent tyre management allowing them to get the better of the Scuderia, who were the only team managing to make the Silver Arrows day difficult. Mercedes making their mark as the team to beat clear today. Russell on the team radio after the race saying 'Very nice, very nice, I like this car, I like this engine.' The bookies favourite starting the season just as he would have hoped. This race marking Mercedes' 61st 1-2 finish, the first for Russell and Antonelli, who will be very hopeful of securing more over the season.

Ferrari start well
Ferrari proved themselves as the only team able to fight Mercedes in the Australian Grand Prix. In practise starts at Bahrain a few weeks ago, Ferrari had a massive advantage at the lights, and that carried through into the race in Melbourne. From starting 4th, Charles Leclerc took the lead in turn 1. Hamilton gaining 2 places from 7th to go into 5th. In the early stages Leclerc and Russell had an epic battle, constantly swapping. And behind them Lewis Hamilton was catching fast, with it eventually being a Ferrari sandwich with George Russell the meat. But when the virtual safety car came out after Isack Hadjar was forced to retire, Mercedes boxed their drivers, whilst Ferrari stayed out. Which ultimately cost the Scuderia, as both the Mercedes' were able to make a 1 stop, going 47 laps on hard tyres work, and still delivered times matching Ferrari's even after they pit at the mid-point of the race.

Linblad delivers on debut
The only rookie on the grid this year proved why he deserved his seat across the whole weekend. After qualifying 9th, Lindblad managed to get up to 4th on the opening lap. He wasn't able to keep that position, but had an epic fight with Ollie Bearman in the Haas, Lindblad having no fears with defending hard to against the fellow Brit. And in the end it was P8 on debut for Lindblad, behind Bearman. A mega debut for the 18 year old.

No luck for Hadjar in first race for Red Bull
In Qualifying, Isack Hadjar showed exactly why Red Bull promoted him, qualifying P3, after his teammate Max Verstappen crashed in Q1. And in the start of the race, the Frenchman looked to be on for a good result, dropping a couple places to P5 due to Ferrari's incredible launch at the start. However he only made it to lap 11 with engine issues bringing an early end to his Red Bull debut. Which brought out the Virtual Safety Car that was crucial to Mercedes' 1-2.

Cadillac and Aston Martin far off the pace
It's going to seemingly be a difficult debut season for Cadillac with Sergio Perez being lapped 3 times on pace today. And his teammate Valtteri Bottas suffered a technical issue on lap 18 to end his weekend. For Aston Martin, they'll consider the race a small win. Both Stroll and Alonso retired multiple times in the race, before being able to re-join, but eventually the reliability issues with the Aston Martin got the better of Alonso's car. Lance Stroll was eventually able to finish, after a long stint in the pits, Stroll re-joined the race and managed to finish, although he was 15 laps down on the leaders. But even having a car finish a race, although not smoothly, is a win for Aston Martin in this nightmare start to the new era with the Honda Power Unit.

Heartbreak again for the home-town hero
It was another Australian Grand Prix to forget for local boy Oscar Piastri, who never made it to light out. On a practise lap before the race, the Aussie hit the curb at the exit of turn 4, sending his McLaren into the wall and out of the race before it could event start. Last year Piastri went onto the grass in tricky conditions, and looked to be out, but miraculously managed to get going and finished 9th. There could be no miracle this year though, a disappointing start to the season for last years title challenger. He wasn't the only one not to start, as Nico Hulkenberg also failed to see lights out after a technical issue for his Audi. In qualifying his teammate Gabriel Bortoleto also suffered a technical issue, taking him out of Q3, reliability being an issue for Audi early on.
